Synchronization of NGO Activities in the Batangtoru Ecosystem (July 23, 2026)

Medan:- The North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA-SU) held a coordination meeting with NGOs at the meeting room of D’Prime Hotel Kuala Namo, on the 23 rd of July 2026. The meeting aimed to synchronize all NGO activities operating in Batangtoru Ecosystem, Sumatra, Indonesia. 8 NGOs participated in the meeting, each providing an overview of their current activities or planned activities in Batangtoru. This synchronization is necessary to further improve work results in environmental and biodiversity protection efforts. The meeting was opened by the Head of the BBKSDA-SU, Novita Kusuma Wardani, S,Hut, M.AP., M.Env, while technical discussions were led the head of BKSDA-SU Area III Padangsidimpuan, Susilo Ari Wibowo. Besides Scorpion Indonesia Foundation, 7 other NGOs also participated in the meeting including YOSL-OIC, Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL), Yayasan Perlindungan Orangutan (COP), Yayasan Konservasi Indonesia (YKI), Yayasan Tangguh Hutan Khatulistiwa (Tahukah), and Yayasan Parsamuhan Bodhicita Mandala (YPBMM).In addition to the coordination of activities in Batangtoru, the synchronization meeting also discussedactivities in Pakpak Bharat. –oOo— Picture from left: Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry, Dr. Ahmad Munawir, head of BBKSDA-SU, Novita Kusuma Wardani, and the head of Head of Administration at the BBKSDA-SU Office, Andar Abdi Saragih. Sumatran orangutans is Estimated at 11,694 Individuals, while Tapanuli Orangutans is Estimated at 716 (July 18, 2026)

Medan: – The population of Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) is estimated at 11,694 individuals, while the population of Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) is estimated at 716  individuals, according to a Press Release of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry issued on the 18th of July 2026. The Ministry revealed the results of the latest population survey of Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutans at the National Seminar on Reflections on a Decade of Collaborative Conservation of Sumatran and Tapanuli Orangutans, held at the Aryaduta Hotel in Medan on Saturday (July 18). This seminar served as an opportunity to present the results of the latest population survey and strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration in supporting conservation efforts for these two endemic Indonesian species.

Scorpion Foundation and BBKSDASU Sign a Cooperation Agreement for 5 Years Duration (May 12, 2026) Medan: – The Scorpion Indonesia Foundation and the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDASU) signed a Cooperation Agreement in the auditorium of the Polonia Hotel, Medan, on Tuesday (May 12, 2026). This Cooperation Agreement is intended to support the government’s efforts to strengthen conservation areas by monitoring illegal wildlife poaching and trade, and conserving Macaque within the North Sumatra province. The Cooperation Agreement has been under discussion at the BBKSDASU office since mid-last year, beginning with a presentation of the Cooperation Plan at the Batang Toru Ecosystem Area to protect biodiversity and address macaque conflicts throughout North Sumatra province. This Cooperation Agreement is valid for five years and will cease in 2029. Another NGO TAHUKAH also signed an agreement with the BBKSDASU for wildlife protection in North Sumatra province. Dismantling of all Rescue Center Facilities in Batangtoru

Due to a government ban on reoccupation of the Pulo Lubang hamlet of Hapesong Baaru village, Batangtoru subdistrict, the Scorpion Foundation was forced to relocate all facilities affected by the floods and landslides in Batangtoru. To do this, the buildings were dismantled into smaller components for easier transport to the new location. During the first week of January 2026 all construction components had been dismantled.

Orangutan Monitoring in Aek Nabara and Bulumario

Scorpion Foundation carried out a monitoring mission in two village adjacent to orangutan habitat in the villages of Aek Nabara and Bulumario from 19th to 22nd January 2026. Scorpion Foundation field staff, Aris Dedi Daulay and a local community caried out four-day orangutan monitoring in South Tapanuli. Below were descriptions of the visits: a).During Day 1 they monitored presence of orangutan in the forest area near Aek Nabara village.  No orangutan or illegal activity was encountered during the Day 1. b).In Day 2, they visited forest area near Aek Nabara village. During the visit to this area, they did not encounter any orangutan but they encountered a couple of Siamang (an endangered species which was also protected by the Indonesia law). c).In Day 3-4, they visited again Bulumario village and encountered two orangutans (a mother and her infant. They frightened these orangutans so that they go away from the village and returned to the jungle. Appearing near residential area could endangered their lives if illegal hunter encounters them.

Terbongkar Lagi! Transaksi Gelap Trenggiling & Harimau Dahan di P.Sidimpuan Disikat Polisi

P.SIDIMPUAN | Jelajahnews.id – Polres Padangsidimpuan kembali mengungkap kasus perdagangan ilegal satwa dilindungi. Pengungkapan ini menjadi yang kedua dalam waktu berdekatan sepanjang 2026, menunjukkan masih maraknya peredaran bagian tubuh satwa langka.Kapolres Padangsidimpuan, AKBP Dr. Wira Prayatna, S.H., S.I.K., M.H., mengungkapkan bahwa sebelumnya pihaknya juga telah membongkar kasus serupa. “Beberapa hari yang lalu kami juga mengungkap kasus sisik trenggiling dengan jumlah cukup besar. Dan hari ini kembali kita ungkap kasus sisik trenggiling serta bagian tubuh harimau dahan. Ini merupakan pengungkapan kedua di tahun 2026,” jelasnya.Dua Tersangka Diamankan Saat Hendak Transaksi Kasus terbaru ini terjadi pada Rabu (29/4/2026) malam di kawasan Batunadua, Kota Padangsidimpuan. Polisi mengamankan dua tersangka saat hendak melakukan transaksi, yakni Muslim (53) dan Resky Saputra (20).Dari tangan pelaku, polisi menyita satu plastik sisik trenggiling, satu lembar kulit harimau dahan, tiga taring, serta tulang belulang. Joint Patrol with Forest Management Unit (KPH)-Area X, Padangsidimpuan (January, 05/06 2026)

The Forest Management Unit Area X Padangsidimpuan carried out joint patrol for two days (5-6/01/2026) in South Tapanuli. The patrol team consisted of five persons from KPH X (Marjito,  Chairil Chandra, Dayani, Anggita, I. Rotonga). Participants from Scorpion Foundation included Aris Dedi and Sahrul Efendi. The patrol aimed to monitoring orangutan habitats and displaced people at the aftermath of the recent flash flood and landslide. a). Day 1, the patrol team visited Tolang Julu village. The team assisted displaced people to build a temporary house and at the same time asked them not to disturb any protected animals in their surrounding areas. b). Day 2, The KPH X and Scorpion Foundation carried out orangutan habitat monitoring in Tolang Jae village. At this location, some areas were affected by the recent landslide and flash-flood. The patrol team encountered some timbers in the area. The KPH checked with the local community to ensure that the timbers would be used by displaced people for repair of their houses only but to for sale or for business.

Evacuation of Three Long-tailed Macaques from Medan to Stabat (January, 06 2026)

The North Sumatra Wildlife Authority (BBKSDASU) and Scorpion Indonesia Foundation evacuated three long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) from Kampung Lalang, Medan, on the 06th of January 2026. These were wild macaques but local residents captured them because of disturbing local community. After receiving a report from a local resident, the BBKSDA-SU together with Scorpion Indonesia Foundation evacuated them and translocated to BBKSDASU rescue center in Stabat, Langkat, for medical check-up. The evacuation team from BBKSDASU included Lusiana Simatupang, and Fuad Harahap while participant from Scorpion was Ramadhani.
