Sumatran orangutans is Estimated at 11,694 Individuals, while Tapanuli Orangutans is Estimated at 716 (July 18, 2026)

The population of Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) is estimated at 11,694 individuals, while the population of Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) is estimated at 716  individuals, according to a Press Release of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry issued on the 18th of July 2026.

The Ministry revealed the results of the latest population survey of Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutans at the National Seminar on Reflections on a Decade of Collaborative Conservation of Sumatran and Tapanuli Orangutans, held at the Aryaduta Hotel in Medan on Saturday (July 18). This seminar served as an opportunity to present the results of the latest population survey and strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration in supporting conservation efforts for these two endemic Indonesian species.
